9 Reasons Why Buying a Boat Is a Better Investment Than You Think

At this point, you’ve probably heard the age-old saying about “the two happiest days of a boat owner’s life” before. Those two days are widely regarded as the day they buy their boat—and the day they sell it!

But that saying hasn’t put on a damper on the boating industry at all in recent years. In fact, there are about 250,000 people buying a new motorboat every year and countless others investing in used boats all across the country.

If you’re thinking about buying a boat, it might be a much better investment than you think it is. There is a lot of time and money that goes into maintaining a boat, but there are also tons of benefits that you’ll get to enjoy when you have access to a boat.

Here are 9 reasons why buying a boat is a good investment.

  1. Brings Your Family Closer

Did you know that the average American family only spends about 40 minutes of quality time together on a daily basis? That’s way too low, but many families are having a hard time finding ways to spend time together these days.

Buying a boat will change that problem immediately. Once you have a boat, you’ll be able to bring your spouse and kids together to take part in fun family activities that you’ll all enjoy.

You’ll also get the chance to teach your kids valuable life lessons while they’re on board your family’s boat. From being careful when the boat is in motion to caring for the boat, you’ll enjoy teaching your kids the things they need to know on your boat.

  1. Let’s You Spend Time with Friends

As you get older, it can get to be harder and harder to find ways to spend time with your friends. Most of you have spouses and kids, which means you can’t spend your nights hanging out at bars and nightclubs. You need to find other ways to connect.

Buying a boat will give you something fun to do with your friends as often as you’d like. Whether you use your boat for early-morning fishing trips or late-night cruises, you’ll love the impact it has on your social life.

  1. Eliminates Stress

Stress is taking a huge toll on the lives of many Americans. According to recent studies, almost 50 percent of people lay in bed at night stressed out, and more than 30 percent admit to feeling fatigued almost every day due to stress.

If you feel like you can’t escape the stress of your daily life, investing in a new boat is a great way to do it. From the moment you set foot on your boat, you’ll feel less stressed than you do now.

There will be times when your boat might add to your stress as opposed to taking stress away. But more often than not, you’ll find that using your boat will be a stress-free experience that will clear your mind and allow you to enjoy life more.

  1. Allows for Many Activities

Do you want to buy a boat and use it to ride around and blow off some steam every day? You’re more than welcome to do it!

But there are also lots of other activities that you can use your boat for once you get behind the wheel of one. You can use it to go fishing, waterski, or even scuba dive, depending on where you live.

You’re not going to have to worry about getting bored when you have a boat. You might fish on it one day, cruise around on it the next, and participate in watersports the day after that. It’ll provide endless opportunities for fun.

  1. Improves Health

How is your physical and mental health at the moment? Buying a boat will improve both by leaps and bounds as long as you use it often.

Here are just a few of the ways in which your new boat will benefit your health:

  • Exposing your skin to the sun on your boat will raise your vitamin D levels, which will boost your mood and make your bones healthier at the same time.
  • Breathing in fresh air on your boat will help regulate your blood pressure and heart rate and give your immune system a jumpstart.
  • Moving around on your boat will provide many of the muscles in your body with a workout and improve your blood circulation.

You should, of course, talk to your doctor if you have serious health problems, as you could make them worse by boating too often. But generally speaking, buying a boat will turn you into a healthier person and make you feel better than you have in years.

  1. Puts You in Touch with Nature

When is the last time you spent an entire day outside? If you’re like most Americans, it’s been a while since you’ve devoted a day to nature.

Studies have indicated that about 25 percent of people don’t go outside at all during an average day. They’ve also shown that up to 90 percent of people report being inside almost all day.

This is an alarming trend that needs to end! There are far too many people who aren’t soaking up all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Buying a boat can change that for you and alter your relationship with nature. You’ll be able to enjoy the water when you’re on your boat, and you’ll also get to reap the rewards that come along with breathing in fresh air and sitting in the sun.

You won’t feel like you’re forcing yourself to spend time outside just for the sake of doing it, either. Since boating is such a fun activity, it won’t be long before you’re wondering why you didn’t start doing it much sooner so that you could live more of your life outdoors.

  1. Provides New Relationships

As people get older, it’s not uncommon for them to lose friends. About 10 percent of Americans even admit that they don’t have any friends at all.

If you have a hard time making and maintaining relationships with other people, you might find that buying a boat fixes this problem. When you have your boat at a marina, you’ll be able to connect with others who share the same interests as you do.

It can be difficult to make friends once you hit a certain age. But something like boating has a way of bringing people together and improving their chances of adding new relationships to their lives.

  1. Teaches You New Skills

When you first buy a boat, you’re not going to have the slightest clue how to take care of all the different parts of it. Even if you have extensive experience working on cars or other vehicles, you’ll be lost when you start poking around on your boat.

It can make doing something like picking out a new propeller for your boat challenging. You’ll need to find out more about boat propellers before you run out and buy one.

But you’ll enjoy learning everything there is to know about boats over the years. Owning a boat will force you to educate yourself about boats so that you can maintain yours. You’ll be surprised by how many new skills you learn within the first few weeks of having a boat.

  1. Gives You an Asset to Sell Later

Selling a boat isn’t always easy. There are a lot of boat owners who will price their boats lower than they should be listed to get bites from those looking to buy a boat.

But even with that being said, a boat is an investment that will allow you to earn back some of the money you spent on it later. Even if you have to sell your boat for less than what it’s worth to get it off your hands, you’ll make some money for it.

The key is to care for your boat when you own it and make the necessary repairs and improvements to it. This will make your boat a whole lot more attractive to buyers in the future and give you an opportunity to recoup as much of your initial investment as you can.

Buying a Boat Can Be a Great Investment

There are a variety of different things that you could invest in right now. From stocks and bonds to real estate and vehicles, you’re free to spend your money in whatever way you choose to do it.

But don’t discount the idea of buying a boat. Whether you choose a small boat that’ll only fit you and a couple friends or a big boat that’ll fit you and your entire extended family, you’ll love having a boat once you get one.

A boat will be great for your relationships, great for your health, and even great for your bottom line if you play your cards right. It’ll also provide you with a bunch of great memories in between the time that you buy and sell it.

You made a good point that having a boat can be an avenue to relieve stress. When I was a kid, whenever I had a tantrum, my grandfather tends to bring me to the lake to calm me down and one time he even took me on a short boating trip. Perhaps I should consider buying a new motor boat and see if bodies of water still have the same effect on me.
